Bicycle security and storage

Secure cycle hangars

We are rolling out cycle hangars for residents as part of our Secure On-street Cycle Parking project.

The Secure On-street Cycle Parking project aims to provide secure, on-street cycle storage options for residents of high-density housing, such as tenements and multi storey buildings, without access to private garages or gardens.

The Council owns the hangars and manages the project, while the use of the hangars is administered by Cyclehoop.

  • The project began with a trial of six hangars in 2014.
  • Phase 1 ran from 2020 to 2023 and installed 180 hangars across the city.
  • Phase 2 is currently underway, which will see another 200 hangars installed. These are being installed in two stages: the first in summer 2024, and the second in 2025.

Theft prevention for your bike

To help you keep your bike safe

  • avoid parking in isolated or dimly lit places

  • lock removable parts, such as wheels, and take smaller parts and accessories with you
  • make the lock and bike hard to move when parked
  • face the lock towards the ground to make it harder to pick
  • be prepared to spend at least 10% of your bike's value on a quality lock to keep it safe. Ask your local bike shop for advice on buying a lock.
